Hiking Gear List

When you go hiking, you’ll need to have a hiking gear list. When you have the right gear, you’ll have a fun trip rather than an adventure you’d rather forget. We do not intend to provide an all inclusive list since every person has different basic needs. We do intend to provide a hiking gear list of items that you will need and you can add or subtract what is best for you. You will also have to consider where you are going to hike. If you are going for a trip in the woods, across the plains, or into the mountains, your hiking gear needs will be different.

When out on the trail, you should carry some extra clothing in case you encounter bad weather, or slip on a rock and fall in the river. You’ll need the basics, such a shirt, pants or shorts, socks, and hiking boots or shoes. In addition to your regular clothes you should consider these items:

  • Moisture wicking base layer
  • Dry socks
  • Gloves
  • Hat
  • Windbreaker
  • Extra sweater
  • Long pants

If you are hiking for less than a mile, a backpack may not be necessary. But, if you are going longer distances, you’ll definitely need a backpack for all the items that you will need to carry with you. When you choose a backpack, ensure you choose one that is the right size for the hiking trip that you will be traveling on. If it is too large, you will be carrying unnecessary extra weight.

It is a good idea to have some tools with you. You never know what you might encounter, so it is better to be prepared for whatever is thrown your way.

  • Topographical map of the area
  • Compass
  • Multi-tool or knife
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Hiking or Trekking pole

You use up a lot of energy when you are on a hike. If the terrain has a lot of slopes you’ll work even harder than if you were hiking across the plains. When you use this energy, you will need to replenish your energy levels. Always have plenty of food with you, and bring extra in case you get stranded overnight on the trail.

  • Beef jerky
  • Nuts
  • Dried fruit
  • Energy bars
  • Water, and a lot of it

Make sure to bring emergency supplies with you so you are prepared for the unexpected.

  • First Aid kit
  • Emergency shelter
  • Emergency blanket
  • Emergency whistle
  • Magnesium firestarter

These items are not necessary for a great hike, but they may be something you want to add to your hiking gear bag.

  • Digital camera
  • GPS unit
  • Binoculars
  • Notebook with a pen or pencil
